Computer Security Awareness for the CGIAR


Did you know that simply by the fact of having our office or home computers connected to a network and on the Internet; these are exposed to several computer security risks?

A computer security risk arises from the intentional or unintentional misuse of computers, network resources as well as the internet. These risks may result in the loss of or damage to computer hardware, software, confidential information, and data integrity as well as network and internet availability. 

In order to help our CGIAR staff understand and mitigate the Computer Security risks, we have prepared a Computer Security Awareness Guide and online quiz.  

This material will help you learn about computer security and test you to make sure you are aware of the security risks you are exposed to and develop the ability to know what to do in different situations.


Follow these steps to get started:

Step 1. Read the Computer Security Awareness Guide for CGIAR staff (680K). This guide provides some tips for responsible computer usage in the workplace, summary of the malicious software (malware) and types of attacks.


Step 2. Take this quiz and test your security awareness: Computer Security Awareness QuizThe quiz includes 20 single/multiple selection questions, it can take you from 5-15 minutes to complete and the minimum passing score is 70%.

    Tip 1: it is suggested to turn on your speakers (or connect your headset) so you can hear the audio available on a few slides.

    Tip 2: make sure to write your e-mail address and center information from the drop-down menu on the first screen. On the second screen, make sure to write your full name correctly so the certificate can be printed with your correct name in the end.

You are welcome to take the test! You can select center='N/A' and write your external email. On the second screen, make sure to write your full name correctly so the certificate can be printed with your correct name in the end.


Step 3. When you have answered the 20 questions, the results will be shown on the screen and two buttons will appear:

1.Submit: You should click on the 'Submit' button to send the results of the quiz to the designated person in your IT Department.

    Tip 3: To keep the a copy of your results, it is recommended to print the page or 'Print Screen' the results page and save it on a file for your records. 

2Print Certificate - click on the 'Print your certificate' button to continue.


Step 4:  At the end of the quiz you will be able to print the 'Certificate of Course Completion' with your name and score.

    Tip 5: you can print the certificate to a PDF file so you can send it to your IT department's Helpdesk (if requested)
