Google's much used instant messaging platform, Google Talk (also known as GTalk or GChat), which was being used under CGXchange is being replaced by Google for the new Google Plus Hangouts. Hangouts integrates Google Plus video Hangouts, Google Plus Messenger and some of the key features of Google Talk. If you already had Google Talk installed on your computer and were using it through CGXchange, you can still continue to use this application for chat even if we've turned on Google Plus hangouts; until, of course, Google decides to stop its support.

What is a Google Hangout?

A Google Hangout allows any user on CGXchange to quickly start-up a high-quality conversation and video call with up to 10 participants. This is a great tool to empower our users to start a virtual meeting/ discussion directly from their computers, as well as share their desktop to deliver a presentation, work together on a Google Drive document and/or give remote control access or assistance to someone if required for troubleshooting purposes. Moreover, users can add visual and sound effects to their conversations and as well.
  • Google+ - Some features, such as multi-person video calls and photo sharing in Hangouts, require a Google+ profile to be created as outlined above.
  • Support - Google+ and Hangouts are not covered under the support provided by Google. If you have any problems, please report them to cgx-support AT cgiar.org.
